Overview

As Calibrate evolved from a direct-to-consumer product into a multi-audience platform, the website’s navigation no longer reflected how different users interacted with the product. Individuals, employers, and employees all had different needs, yet the existing structure treated them as a single audience, making it harder for users to quickly find relevant information.

I led the redesign of the site’s information architecture and navigation system to better support these distinct journeys. The goal was to create a clearer structure that guides users to the right content faster while enabling a flexible CMS-driven navigation system that editors could manage independently without relying on developers.

The problem

The original navigation had been designed for a direct-to-consumer experience, which meant it did not scale well as the business expanded to serve additional audiences. Employers and employees had difficulty identifying the right entry points, which created confusing user journeys and increased friction when navigating the site.

At the same time, the CMS structure made it difficult for internal teams to update navigation content without developer support. This lack of flexibility created operational bottlenecks and increased the risk of outdated navigation elements affecting conversions and user engagement.

My role

I worked as the UX Designer responsible for redesigning the site’s navigation structure and defining the interaction patterns across desktop and mobile experiences. My role focused on improving the information architecture while ensuring the new navigation system supported accessibility, scalability, and editorial flexibility.

I collaborated with a cross-functional team that included a Product Manager, Strategist, QA Engineer, and Developer. Together we aligned business goals, user journeys, and technical constraints to deliver a navigation system that improved both the user experience and internal workflows.

Approach

The redesign began by reorganizing the information architecture around audience-specific navigation paths. Instead of presenting a single generalized structure, the navigation was segmented into clear categories for individuals, organizations, and employees, while maintaining a small set of universal links such as blog content, FAQs, and account access. This structure helped users immediately identify the section most relevant to them.

The navigation system was then designed to work seamlessly across desktop and mobile environments. On desktop, dropdown menus provided structured navigation with clear hierarchy and contextual content, while mobile experiences used an accordion-style interaction to support smaller screens and touch navigation. Accessibility was integrated from the start by designing keyboard navigation states, maintaining WCAG-compliant contrast across light and dark themes, and ensuring that all interactive elements were properly documented for consistent implementation.

Outcome

The redesigned navigation significantly improved how users move through the site. By structuring the experience around audience-specific journeys, visitors can reach relevant content more quickly and understand where they are within the site’s structure.

The CMS-driven navigation system also enabled internal teams to update navigation elements independently, reducing reliance on developers and allowing the organization to adapt content and campaigns more efficiently. The result was a navigation experience that is clearer for users, more flexible for internal teams, and scalable as the platform continues to grow.
